Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging of the musculoskeletal system provides pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and soft tissue throughout the body, helping consultants diagnose and treat rheumatic conditions.

Patients can benefit from specialist musculoskeletal ultrasound services at both Cannock Chase Hospital and New Cross Hospital.

Our services are delivered by a team of dedicated musculoskeletal ultrasound staff, including:

I am a radiographer by background and trained in diagnostic ultrasound in 1996, specialising in musculoskeletal ultrasound in 2002, working in Radiology.

In 2008 I joined the rheumatology team at Cannock Chase Hospital in a new post as a consultant sonographer/research fellow. The post is shared between Cannock, Keele University and the Haywood Hospital, Stoke on Trent and I spend part of my week at each centre.

My role is to develop diagnostic ultrasound and guided injection services at both hospitals, and to provide a link between clinical practice and research in the context of a relatively new field of musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology services.

This post has enabled both Trusts to develop a rheumatology ultrasound service and facilitate research into diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory disease.

I am also involved in the training of other Health care professionals in the use of ultrasound, both diagnostic and guided injections.

I run national study days and am a regular speaker on ultrasound and guided injections on national courses and at several universities.  I am founder and Chair of the Musculoskeletal Sonographer Special Interest Group and a member of the National Ultrasound Governance Committee.

I qualified as a registered General Nurse in 1987 and after working in Gynaecology, Acute Medicine and Intensive Care I joined Rheumatology in 1993.

For 10 years I managed the Rheumatology Day unit during which time I extended my skills and knowledge and have completed extended study in the management of rheumatological conditions, intra articular injections and focused ultrasound.

I now utilise all of these skills in the musculoskeletal ultrasound department performing intra articular injections with or without ultrasound and focused diagnostic scans.

My role is to facilitate the treatment of patients for joint injections within the team and to perform some focused ultrasound scans as part of the diagnostic service in rheumatology.

I am also involved in training and provide a link for other health care professionals for training and updating in guided and unguided injections.

This is a new, exciting and evolving post, and I am one of only a handful of nurses nationwide who have the skill and knowledge to use ultrasound in rheumatology for diagnostics and injections.

Our administration support service is available Monday to Friday, from 9am until 4.30pm.
