New Cross Hospital Ward C41 (Adult Medicine) is an extremely busy acute medical ward that specializes in Gastroenterology patients. It is a 27-bedded ward with 3 bays allocated for female patients and 3 bays for male patients, of which each sex is nursed at the opposite ends of the ward. There are 3 side rooms ideally for isolated cases. Patients are admitted to the ward either from AMU, Clinic or from home. We also have a nurse-led day case units for planned abdominal paracentesis and infusions.
The ward has eight consultants, namely Dr. B. McKaig, Dr. I. Perry, Dr. A. Veitch, Dr. M. Brookes, Dr S Menon, Dr Aravinth Murugananthan, Dr Helen Steed and Dr Chris Corbett. The nursing team is comprised of a Senior Sister (Sr Maria Tan), four Junior Sisters / Team Leaders (Sr Elva McBean, Sr LaSandra Thompson, Sr Laura Corbett and CN Sundeep Chahal) with a group of competent and caring Staff Nurses and Health Care Assistants. The ward matron is Matron Doreen Black while the ward pharmacist is Daniel Peddie. We have a ward receptionist and ward assistant in the weekdays. We also work closely with the dieticians and drug & alcohol liason team.
The Gastroenterology ward (Ward C41) is adjacent the Endoscopy unit. We are proud to have a multicultural and dynamic nursing team whose ethos is to have the knowledge to treat and the passion to care.
The ward is committed to personal and professional development thus the staff receive support and training to deliver the care requirements of the speciality and enable them to achieve their full potential and become an integral member of the multi professional team.
The Gastroenterology ward performs a variety of standard and advanced Gastroenterology-related procedures. The team is driven to deliver the day to day service needs of in-patients by providing a high standard of care, clinical supervision and leadership.
The ward has successfully piloted, audited, achieved and implemented the 'Productive Ward' Initiative from the Institute of Innovation. We have developed nurse-led ascitic taps and paracentesis procedures. The ward and its staff have recently and very proudly been nominated and awarded in the Trust Annual Royal Awards for 2014. The Gastroenterology team have received multiple nominations and awards for outstanding services which include the "CEO Team Award", "Outstanding Contribution to the Patient Experience Team Award", and "Patient and Staff Experience Individual Award". The ward has also been recognised during the Nurses' day as the winner for the "Best theme ward" and the "Best team effort" in two successive years.
