This service operates from 6.30pm until 8am Monday - Friday and all day weekends and bank holidays. Please ring 111 for an appointment.

NHS 111 - the NHS non-emergency number

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.

It’s fast, easy and free.

Call 111 and speak to a highly trained adviser, supported by healthcare professionals. They will ask you a series of questions to assess your symptoms and immediately direct you to the best medical care for you.

When to use 111

You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation.

• you need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency
• you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
• you don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call
• you need health information or reassurance about what to do next

Emergency and urgent eye conditions

All patients with emergency and urgent eye conditions will be seen in the Eye Referral Unit at the Wolverhampton and Midlands Counties Eye Infirmary, giving patients access to a team of eye experts.

• 8.00am – 5pm Monday – Friday
• 8.00am – 4pm Saturday / Sunday

For emergency or urgent eye conditions outside of these hours, patients will be seen in the Emergency Department (ED).

Having the emergency eye service located in the Eye Referral Unit (building A34) will give patients access to a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, doctors and ophthalmic consultants. We hope this will help enhance the patient’s experience when coming into the eye infirmary. 

If you have the following eye conditions please attend your local Minor Eye Conditions (MEC) Service/Opticians rather than ED / ERU:

• Red eye or eye lids
• Dry eye, gritty and uncomfortable eyes
• Irritation and inflammation of the eye
• Significant and recent sticky discharge from the eye or watery eye 
• In-growing eyelashes
• Something in your eye

Emergency Department (A&E)

The Emergency Department (A&E) is intended for patients who have received a serious injury, sudden severe Illness or a medical emergency.

Only attend a hospital Accident & Emergency department in the event of an accident or emergency. An emergency is a critical or life-threatening situation, such as:-

• loss of consciousness
• acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
• persistent, severe chest pain
• breathing difficulties
• severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
• severe allergic reactions
• severe burns or scalds

Dial 999 - Life threatening emergencies

Call 999 in a medical emergency – when someone is seriously ill or injured and their life is at risk
