Walk Leader Remembered

Walk Leader Remembered

Date of release: Wednesday 27th November, 2014

Walkers rambled from ‘Wolverhampton to Rome’ as they clocked up 1223 miles on a charity walk and raised £1923 for the British Heart Foundation in memory of dedicated volunteer walk leader Mohan Singh.

Mohan was an active volunteer walk leader with Walking for Health and specialised in organising canal walks around Wolverhampton including three separate walks that covered the 15 miles between Birmingham & Wolverhampton along the Main Line canal. He also took a keen interest in leading and helping organise many history & heritage walks around Blakenhall & All Saints.

The Challenge Trail was the signature walk of this year’s Wolverhampton Walking Festival which offered a range of thirty free walks for people to get involved with.

After Mohan died, his fellow walk leaders from Walking for Health organised The Challenge Trail in aid of the British Heart Foundation and gave walkers the choice of three trail options, a 2.5 mile bronze, 7 mile silver or 10 mile gold trail route. All the trail routes started from Aldersley Leisure Village and were way-marked as well as incorporating checkpoints en route.

An amazing turnout saw 163 walkers complete the Challenge Trail clocking up the equivalent of walking from Wolverhampton to Rome and raising £1923 for the British Heart Foundation at the same time.
Mrs Kaur, Mohan’s wife said “Mohan expressed much joy from sharing his walks with such a fantastic group of people. Each walk was truly rewarding to him, he was very passionate about it and I can't emphasise enough what the spirit of the group meant to him”

Next year’s Wolverhampton Walking Festival will be held on 2nd to 10th May 2015, once again being jointly run by Healthy Lifestyles Service of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, The City of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton Ramblers.

Enquiries are welcome to either host a walk or to receive information about the 2015 Walking Festival from the Healthy Lifestyles Service Tele: 0800 073 4242 or email rwh-tr.walkingforhealth@nhs.net.
