New Cross Hospital’s Midwifery Led Unit is in line for Team of the Year at the prestigious Nursing Times Awards 2014.
The family-friendly unit finds out if it has won at a ceremony taking place at the Grosvenor Park Hotel in London on October 29th.
MLU Manager Lyndsay Durkin said: “We’re delighted to have made the short list in the Team of the Year category at the NT Awards.
“Our unit which offers expectant mums a comfortable, home-style birth, has gone from strength to strength since it opened and our team’s high standards are quite rightly being recognised.
“I’m really proud of my team and what they’ve achieved in a short space of time.”
The unit is staffed by 19 highly experienced midwives and healthcare assistants and boasts five birthing rooms – all with en-suite facilities, music centres, televisions and the very latest birthing equipment.
The non-clinical environment has soft furnishings and gentle lighting to give a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
Just under 1,000 babies have been born at the unit since it was officially opened by Wolverhampton’s Olympic gymnast Kristian Thomas in October 2012. Kristian’s mum Cath, a midwife at New Cross for 28 years, is now the hospital’s Delivery Suite Manager.
